Today’s Art & Joe hasn’t always been Art & Joe. In 1904, the city of Steelville had a fire. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Big Bend School
Big Bend School, in Steelville Mo, was built in the late 1800s. It consisted of one room with no basement or attic, built on 80 acres of land.

Crawford County Courthouse
In 1834 the lines of Crawford County were redrawn to the size the county is today. The first Crawford County Courthouse, after the county size was reduced, was built by Levi L. Snelson in 1834.

Creekside Fudge and Gifts
Creekside Fudge and Gifts is housed in the building that was originally Bass Mercantile. The building was built of brick right after the fire in 1904.

Edie’s Backwoods Antiques

The history of Edie’s Antiques, now called Backwoods Antiques, is a long one. The land itself was included in the 80 acres of land purchased from the government by Simeon Frost in September of 1838.

Family Inheritance
On this spot once stood the Gibson Hotel, built and owned by Thomas R. Gibson & his wife. The hotel had a masonic lodge and an opera house (Crawford Mirror 7-16-1891 1). It was rebuilt after the fire of 1904.

The Frisco Railroad, the Tracks, and the Frisco Depot
The railroad still wasn’t finished building tracks after 14 years and was sold to the San Francisco Railroad. Steelville, St. Louis, Cuba, Salem and Little Rock, AR, started to build a railroad in the Spring of 1875.

The Former ‘Turtle Earth’ Building
This building was originally built in October of 1884, as the Bank of Steelville. It has also seen many more businesses since that time, such as a jewelry store, an insurance company, Locklear & Associates, and most recently, Turtle Earth.

Golden Echoes Resale Building
The building that currently houses Golden Echoes Resale Shop (The Scott family referred to it as the Post office building.) was built between 1920-1930.

Hotel Main
Hotel Main was the last real hotel built in Steelville, Missouri. The hotel was built in 1908 and was the first concrete block structure in Steelville.

Lange General Store

Puckett General is the earliest known store to occupy this building. The Puckett’s owned 3 adjoining buildings, using one as a dry goods store, and rented out the other two.

Nedra Sanders Broccoli
Nedra Sanders was born on February 28, 1919 in Steelville, Missouri. She had a brother named William J. “Bill” Sanders. He was born November 2, 1917 in Steelville, Missouri.

Steelville’s Biggest Disaster
On July 7, 1898 Steelville was struck by the most destructive flood, to date, between 2:30 and 3:00 AM. “The flood was a result of the unheeded warning from the railroad. The citizens had been warned however, construction continued and damages resulted over the years.

Steelville was originally known as “Valley of Springs.” The first settlers in Steelville were William Britton, who built a small grist mill along the Yadkin Creek, and James Steel, who operated a trading post.

Steelville Supply Store Building
L.H. Scott and Mr. Devol owned a hardware and implement business. The Halbert and
Saltsman General Store carried groceries, dry goods, and shoes. The four gentlemen became partners and the Steelville Supply Store was started on October 5 1905.

Trail of Tears
Trail of Tears National Historic Trail traces the removal of the Cherokee through our area. The Cherokee were removed from their homelands and several groups were taken across Crawford County in 1837-1839.

Wildwood Springs Lodge
It was a hunting trip that brought Mr. William Forester and his two sons Henry and Frank Forester to the Steelville area. They were so impressed by the bluff overlooking the Meramec River that they bought about 85 acres of land there in 1921 and made plans to build a large resort hotel.
