Creekside Fudge and Gifts

By: Nevaeh Gilbert

Creekside Fudge and Gifts is housed in the building that was originally Bass Mercantile. The building was built of brick right after the fire in 1904. It was owned by Claude Bass, at the time.

Bass Mercantile carried groceries, dry goods, shoes, clothing, fabric, meat, etc. When you would shop at the store you would give the cashier your shopping list and he/she would fill your order for you. You wouldn’t have to shop for your own food. They would give you credit, if you needed it, then you paid at the end of the month.

Mr. Claude Bass had four kids with his wife Pearl...Roland and Rowena were twins, Claude Jr. and Laddie. Roland took over the store when Claude passed away. The current owner, Julie Bass, informed the current renter, Marilyn Lakaner, that there is a sinkhole beneath the building, and an old empty safe that fell through the floor many years ago.

Creekside Fudge and Gifts has bullet holes on the East side of the building as a result of a bank robbery that happened on March 20,1925.
