Today’s Art & Joe hasn’t always been Art & Joe. In 1904, the city of Steelville had a fire. The cause of the fire is unknown. The fire started in a two-story wooden building owned by Dr. Coffee at the time. The flames rapidly spread to the store of Haley Bros. The fire started at 8 o’clock on a Friday night, leaving all the central parts of the town in ashes.

After the fire, the Gibson family built the present day building, but divided it into two separate stores. There was a drug store on the left and a barber shop on the right. Dr. Coffee built the store because during that time period you couldn’t get a decent cup of coffee in Steelville, you had to go all the way to Cuba to get one. In 1954 Dr. Coffee bought half of it and then later bought the other.

After it was divided into two separate stores, there was a door to and from the drug store and barber shop that connected them. Then, in 2010 Bob Bell (Owner of the building) remodeled the store.

The cabinets and mirrors pictured below were originally in the buildings.
